Class 10 Board Exams: Subject-Wise Preparation Tips
Board Exams Are Manageable
Class 10 boards feel like the biggest challenge of your life right now. They're important — but they're also very predictable. CBSE follows a pattern, and if you prepare strategically, scoring 90+ is absolutely within reach for any student who puts in consistent effort.
Mathematics (Strategy: Practice, Practice, Practice)
Maths is the one subject where there's no shortcut — you must solve problems. But solve them smartly:
- High-weightage chapters: Algebra (20 marks), Geometry (15 marks), Trigonometry (12 marks) — these three sections make up over 50% of the paper
- Solve 5 years of previous papers — question patterns repeat almost exactly
- NCERT Exemplar problems are harder than the board exam. If you can solve these, the actual exam will feel easy
- Show all steps — CBSE gives marks for working, even if the final answer is wrong
Science (Strategy: Diagrams + Numericals)
Science has three sections — Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Each has a different optimal approach:
- Physics: Master numericals (lens formula, resistance, power). Learn to draw ray diagrams and circuit diagrams neatly — they carry marks
- Chemistry: Memorize balanced equations, periodic table trends, and functional group reactions. Use mnemonics — they genuinely help
- Biology: Diagrams are your best friend. A well-labelled diagram of the human heart or a flower's cross-section can score full marks even if your written answer is incomplete
English (Strategy: Format + Expression)
English is where many students lose easy marks because they ignore format and structure:
- Letter/notice/article writing: Correct format alone guarantees 2-3 marks out of 5
- Literature answers: Quote from the text. Examiners love evidence-based answers
- Reading comprehension: Answer in your own words, don't copy sentences from the passage
- Grammar sections: Practice tenses, reported speech, and active-passive daily for 15 minutes
Social Science (Strategy: Maps + Timelines)
Social Science feels overwhelming because of the sheer volume, but it's the easiest subject to score 90+ in:
- History: Create timelines for each chapter. Dates, events, and outcomes — organized chronologically, they make sense instead of being random facts
- Geography: Map work carries 5 marks. Practice map marking every week — it's free marks
- Political Science & Economics: Understand concepts, don't memorize definitions. If you understand why federalism works, you can answer any question about it
General Exam Day Tips
- Read the entire paper first — spend 15 minutes reading, not writing
- Attempt easy questions first — build confidence and secure marks
- Write neatly — examiners subconsciously give better marks to clean papers
- Don't leave any question blank — write something relevant and you might get partial marks
- Use the last 15 minutes to review — check for silly mistakes in calculations
Board exams test what you know, not how smart you are. Prepare consistently, follow NCERT religiously, and you'll do better than you expect.
