Why NCERT Is Enough for NEET Biology (And How to Use It Right)
The NCERT Secret
Every NEET topper says the same thing: "NCERT is enough for Biology." Every coaching centre says the opposite: "Buy our ₹2,000 study material." Guess which one is actually backed by data?
An analysis of NEET papers from 2018-2025 shows that 85-92% of Biology questions can be answered directly from NCERT textbooks. Not paraphrased, not twisted — directly from the text, diagrams, and exercises.
The Problem Isn't NCERT — It's How You Read It
Most students "read" NCERT passively — their eyes scan the page while their mind wanders. That's not studying. Here's the method that actually works:
The Three-Pass Method
Pass 1: Understanding (First Read)
Read each chapter slowly with the goal of understanding, not memorizing. Don't highlight. Don't take notes. Just read and understand the logic behind each concept. If something doesn't make sense, re-read it or look up a 5-minute YouTube explanation. This pass takes 2-3 hours per chapter.
Pass 2: Annotation (Second Read, 2-3 Days Later)
This is where the magic happens. Read the chapter again and mark:
- Yellow highlight: Definitions and named reactions/processes
- Green highlight: Examples, exceptions, and specific numbers
- Underline: Statements that could become direct MCQ questions
- Star mark (★): Diagrams and tables — these appear in exams regularly
Also read the small text, figure captions, and the "Additional Information" boxes. NEET loves picking questions from these overlooked sections.
Pass 3: Active Recall (Third Read, 1 Week Later)
Cover the page text and try to recall the highlighted points from memory. Then uncover and check. Mark everything you couldn't recall — these are your weak spots for targeted revision.
Chapter-Wise Importance (Biology)
- Highest marks: Genetics & Evolution, Ecology, Human Physiology
- Medium marks: Plant Physiology, Cell Biology, Reproduction
- Lower marks but easy: Biotechnology, Animal Kingdom classification
The Exercise Questions Nobody Does
NCERT exercise questions at the end of each chapter are criminally underused. Many NEET questions are rephrased versions of these exercises. Solve every single one. Write out the answers in full — don't just "think" the answer.
When You DO Need Reference Books
For two areas, supplementing NCERT makes sense:
- Genetics problem-solving: NCERT teaches concepts but doesn't have enough practice problems. Use any genetics problem book for additional practice
- Assertion-Reason questions: NCERT doesn't have these. Practice from previous year papers and mock test compilations
A Typical Biology Study Day
Morning (2 hours): NCERT reading — one chapter, second or third pass. Afternoon (1 hour): MCQ practice from previous years on that chapter. Evening (30 min): Anki flashcard review of previously studied chapters.
This method is boring. It's repetitive. And it works better than any expensive study material on the market. The toppers aren't lying when they say NCERT is enough — they're just leaving out that they read it five times.
